Alkali Metals are a column of metals in the periodic table consisting of elements like lithium (Li), sodium (Na), potassium (K), rubidium (Rb), Cesium (Cs) and Francium (Fr). This group of metals lies in the S-block of the periodic table as all elements as alkali metals have their outermost electron in s-orbital.

These metals are known to be soft, shiny and highly reactive even at standard temperature and pressure. They are extremely soft and can be cut easily with a sharp object. Naturally only found in salts, they never exist as free elements. Their high reactivity doesn’t let them occur in pure form.

Real Life Application of Alkali Metals

Alkali Metals are a part of the products we use in our everyday life. If we have to take examples, here goes:

Lithium: White Lithium Grease is used for delicate moving parts. It is also used on people with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder as a mood stabilizer.

Sodium: It is used most commonly in the form of table salt.

Potassium: It is found in bananas and other foods. It is also used to make soaps and gunpowder.

Alkali Metals are used to form various derivatives which are used as chemicals in many products.
