As 2018 moves into its second quarter, there has been a whole load of smartphone launches to spice up the market at the moment. Smartphone trends have largely remained the same since 2017, although many manufacturers are now focusing on improving the overall experience of the devices rather than cram in the kitchen sink with the package. , Android 8.0 Oreo is slowly getting more mainstream by the day as different manufacturers have finally started providing updates to their pre-existing smartphones and get them on the latest Android platform. Killerfeatures set out to find the best smartphones under Rs.20,000 and see how last year’s champions hold up now.

List of Latest Smartphones under Rs.20,000

  1. XiaomiRedmi Note 5 Pro: Xiaomi seems to have cracked the formula in India for blockbuster smartphones and the Note 5 Pro follows neatly in the line of its predecessors which was one of the highest selling smartphones in India. It provides some subtle but incremental changes over the previous generation Note 4 and the Mi A1, making it the new go-to smartphone under Rs.20,000. It has a faster Snapdragon 636 SoC, 4/6GB RAM, and 64GB onboard storage. The best feature of the smartphone is its camera which is among the best in its segment and ever so slightly edges out the Mi A1, which was last year’s champion. It also features the new 18:9 form factor which looks sleek and has minimal bezels. If you want an all-around device, this is by the best on the list. (Latest Smartphones under Rs.20,000)
  2. XiaomiMi A1: Despite being from 2017, the Mi A1 is still going strong because of the popularity of the Android One project. There is no other smartphone under Rs.20,000 that offers unadulterated Google experience better than the Mi A1. It still has one of the best portrait modes among any smartphone in this segment and regular updates keep this device pretty relevant among the people who appreciate stock android over custom skins. The best, however, is the price which has come down from Rs.14,999 to just Rs.11,999, making it one hell of a bargain for anyone looking for a fantastic smartphone under Rs.20,000.
  3. Vivo V7 Plus: The Vivo V7 Plus isn’t the most feature-rich device on this list nor is it the newest but it is arguably one of the most popular. It has a very good camera especially for selfies and also features a 6 inch IPS display with the new 18:9 form factor. The biggest selling, however, is the cameras as mentioned as it has a 24MP front facing the camera with LED flash for those flawless selfies. If you are a selfie enthusiast, then this is your best bet under Rs.20,000.
  4. Honor7x: The Honor 7x is the successor to the Huawei’s mid-range tyrant, the 6X, which was one of the best budget smartphones launched last year. The Honor7x improves in quite a few key areas of the 6x and also brings to the table the 18:9 display format. It also has the AI implementation that we see on Huawei’s flagship Mate 10. On the whole, the new SoC coupled with finer adjustments to the UI makes this device a pleasure to use regardless of the situation. The 64GB variant can be found for as low as Rs.15,999, which gives strong competition to some other brands competing in this price segment.
  5. Nokia 6 (2018 Edition): Nokia is slowly getting a reboot as it claws its way up into the mainstream. The Nokia 6 received a refresh to compete in the Sub-20K category not too long ago and things are looking much better now. It gets an updated 8MP front camera with a 16MP rear camera and 3/4GB RAM with 32/64GB storage respectively. Where Nokia differs itself is with an almost stock version of Android without much bloatware, and it is one of the few companies to provide regular updates to its devices.
  6. Moto G5s Plus: Motorola is currently working on its successor, but the G5s Plus is still a good all-around smartphone. It shares nearly all the traits of the Mi A1 including one of the few companies providing regular updates to its devices. It has a good ergonomic build and device with its 5.2-inch display, suits people with smaller hands nicely. However, one area where it always fell short of the competition was the cameras and suffice to say that it isn’t at par with the competition. But, with lowered prices, it still makes for a decent buy.
  7. Samsung Galaxy J7 pro: This is another device that was launched in 2017 and was one of Samsung’s more popular devices. It received a significant price cut and now retails under the Sub-20K price bracket. It has a very impressive 13MP front camera for selfies, making it one of the better devices for the task. The specifications aren’t anything to write home about, but it does have 4GB RAM and 64GB storage. It makes a sensible buy for anyone looking for a good smartphone from Samsung under 20K.
  8. Honor 9i: In an unexpected move, Huawei launched the 9i in India last year, and it was one of the more underrated devices in the price segment. The 9i was the only camera in this price segment to feature dual front and rear cameras, and it translated to a very strong camera smartphone. However, the apparent lack of advertising meant that it wasn’t received too well which is a shame because it had one of the best displays and the best camera quality in this price segment.(Latest Smartphones under Rs.20,000)
